In today’s post, I am going to step outside of my norm. In light of current events and recent past events, I am realizing more and more the rampant political idolatry and cultic behaviour that is causing division and distraction among some Christians.
God does not call us to idolize any man or leader, or to put our faith and trust in them. Yet, I observe fierce devotion, excuse making, and justification for ungodly behavior in leadership by some Christians. God’s word tells us to pray for leaders; not to idolize them.
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2: 1-4.
Furthermore, the Bible tells us, “For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.” Psalms 75: 6-7.
God wants us to look to Him.
So why are some Christians so riled up? God wants us to look to Him. He is our source. We need Him desperately. As a Christian with conservative values, I do not believe it is my position to fanatically cling to one side or the other. I believe it is important to vote the best I can for the most righteous and wise option- if that is possible.
Either way, I can have peace as I depend on God to help us. God can help our leaders. I pray for them. It is our obligation to pray for them. Our leaders need God’s righteous wisdom in every decision they make. I pray for our nation to come to repentance. Global repentance is needed.
It saddens me to see the division and discord, even within the church, due to politics. Some people believe so black-and-white, and that one side is more holy than the other, that they do not seem to acknowledge that both sides are polluted by the enemy.
There is corruption on both sides. Perhaps, one side is worse than the other. There are differing opinions. It is not easy pickings. Some don’t know that there are some very disturbing and terrible things being done by the folks they may believe are fellow Christians, because those people are a member of their political party.
The enemy cloaks himself behind labels, titles, descriptions, religious and political affiliations, causes, etc. Christians can get caught up in the confusion when they take their eyes off of Jesus. Which side is better? What to do? Sometimes, the options are not good.
The main and most effective thing I can do, is to pray and ask God for His guidance, mercy, and intervention.
Finally, God is love. We are to show love. “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8.
Love and compassion are hugely important when it comes to leadership and all matters across the board. This is the basis for how I should live life and make decisions:
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” Matthew 22: 37-39.
